A parking-brake indicator commonly shows that the brake is applied. Electronic systems may distinguish normal engagement from a release problem or other fault. Some vehicles also share a warning lamp with the main braking system.
Use the normal release procedure in the manual. Do not attempt to drive against a brake that will not release. A persistent red warning or any change in braking performance requires the manufacturer's recommended response.
