Jim Jennings Transmissions - Ask the Technician
What type of transmission fluid should I use in my car?
It is important to understand that various transmissions are designed to work with specialized fluids that engineers formulated to provide the characteristics needed to help the transmission work great and live a long life. Not only does transmission fluid lubricate, cool, clean, provide the hydraulic pressure needed to make things work but it also has to possess the exact friction characteristics that help the clutches and bands hold just right. If the fluid is too slick, the clutches and bands will slip. If the fluid has too much friction additive, your shifts will be uncomfortably hard. In either case the life of your transmission may be shortened if you use the wrong fluid.
Be sure to read your owner's manual, research it on the Internet or call us to be sure you are using the fluid that was designed by your vehicle's engineers. In addition to manufacturer specific fluids, some ingenious engineers have produced fluid additives that, when added to certain types of transmission fluid, will provide the characteristics designed for that transmission avoiding the need for the more expensive fluids.
Based on our 52 years in this business, we strongly recommend using the exact fluid prescribed by your owner's manual if it is still under the factory warranty and be sure to change it (service your transmission) every 25,000 to 30,000 miles as part of a regular maintenance schedule for your vehicle. We also recommend you do the prescribed maintenance on your manual transmission, your 4 wheel drive's transfer case and differentials.
